One or two readers (of the very few remaining who follow this blog) may recall that I went on a while ago about my inability to grasp the allure of Twitter's service; as I explained then, the whole business struck me as being one giant exercise in egoism, as one must be narcissistic in the extreme to imagine that there are actually people who are willing to listen to one's every random, 140-character limited muttering.
As it turns out, I've now found a website which validates my suspicions, at least in certain circumstances. Take the following tasty morsel, for instance:
#iranelection - could definitely think of more interesting trending topics.. Let the iranians sort themselves out.
This "tweet" is so staggering in its arrogance, callousness and solipsism that I'm convinced the twit who wrote it would merit a special place in any hell established for narcissists; it's bad enough that there are undoubtedly large numbers of people thinking similarly self-involved thoughts out there, but to be so shameless and unaware as to admit to such a thing? As someone once noted, a great part of what it means to be wise is simply knowing when to shut up.
PS: It turns out that there's another site which also tries to keep track of navel-gazing twits. Who really needs to know that you were struck by Montezuma's revenge 10 times in a single night?
I suppose I am still one of those one or two that still actually follow the blog. Keep posting.
