The following mordantly amusing story shows that some illusions about the nature of Islamic terrorism die hard: first a clip from Britain's Times.

A LEBANESE student suspected of trying to paralyse the German railway network with a bomb concealed in a suitcase appeared in court yesterday, as a huge police hunt for a second suspect continued.

I blame Gerhard Schröder and his neocon warmonger clique for dragging Germany into an Iraqi war over oil pipelines, bringing the blowback of Muslim freedom fighters down upon the German people! Germany out of Iraq now! Oh, wait, you say Germany never was in Iraq? Then why could they possibly hate innocent little Germany? You must be lying!

[T]he case has rattled Germans, many of whom have clung to the belief that their government’s opposition to the war in Iraq would insulate them from attacks like those in London or Madrid. The trouble-free World Cup in Germany last month reinforced the sense of security.

"People thought for the longest time that Germany would be safe because we didn't send troops to Iraq," said Johannes Schmalz, the president of the agency for the protection of the constitution -- a rough equivalent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation -- in the state of Baden-Wurttemberg.

Ja, sehr geehrte herren und damen, as gauche and simplisme as it sounds to sophisticated Europeans like yourselves, Muslim terrorists really do hate you for your freedoms, not for anything you necessarily have or haven't done abroad. Cowering under your bedcovers at home won't spare you the wrath of fanatics for whom your very way of life represents an abomination and a signal that Islam's world mission remains incomplete - nothing short of you all saying the shahadah and strictly abiding by the sharia will do the trick.

PS: USA Today provides more evidence of the widespread nature of this all-too-common delusion in Germany.

"I am shocked," said Jürgen Lesch, 56, a Dresden software developer. "Now it looks like terrorism has reached us, as well."

Germany's refusal to take part in the U.S.-led war in Iraq once had Germans thinking Islamic terrorists would focus elsewhere, said Lesch's wife, Marita, 52, a teacher. "We didn't fight in Iraq, and until now we assumed that if we behaved well in the world, nothing would happen to us," she said.

Ms. Lesch is probably scratching her head over how Germany's been naughty enough to deserve righteous punishment, but she needn't worry, as that large corps of professional masochists and apologists for evil is hard at work cooking up just such an explanation, however farfetched.

Michael Lüders, a Middle East expert and government policy consultant, said, "Germany is reorienting its (foreign) policy. It did not call for an immediate cease-fire (during Israeli attacks) in Lebanon, and that was disappointing in the Arab world. Some radical forces now think Germany should be punished," he said.

Wow, these Muslims sure are strict, aren't they? Now it's no longer enough to leave them alone, you've got to rush to protect them from the consequences of their terrorism to stay in their good books! Next thing you know, they'll even be rioting and killing over trivial stuff like cartoons ...

Hmm, well I don't see that there's any need to reserve judgment on at least one point: the vehicle pictured as supposedly having a hole cut in its roof by an Israeli missile obviously suffered no such damage. Even a dud missile would have so much kinetic energy as to cause charring which is not at all in evidence. There's no question that a fraud of some sort has been perpetuated, only a question of precisely how extensive it is.
