There is an "FHM Asia"; do they have a separate competition?

The photo editor for that website clearly agrees with you btw; he's gone out of his way to pick the most unflattering pictures possible of nearly all of them. In which task he's been aided by the fact that half of them (Hatcher, Electra, McCarthy, Jolie, Berry) are well into their thirties, aren't they? which means that this is probably "Sad Dads Top Ten" rather than frat boys. He's also picked a picture of Jessica Alba in which it looks quite likely to me that there is another substantial percentage representation of black women in the top ten; she looks more like a young Mariah Carey in that photo than I would have thought possible.

Disagree with you on the subject of Keira Knightley however; I've met her and she is extraordinarily pretty.

Frank McGahon

It says more about the demographics of the FHM reader than anything else. Ms Johansson doesn't do anything at all for me and even though I agree that Kiera Knightley is very plain (a poor imitation of Natalie Portman), she made poor Scarlett look like the Pillsbury doughboy posing toned and tanned along side pale and pudgy Johansson on the cover of the recent Vanity Fair.

The inclusion of Jenny McCarthy and Carmen Electra leads me to suspect that most FHM readers also subscribe to a certain pajama-clad-prorietor's magazine. I can't fathom the presence of Teri Hatcher on the list she's certainly slim (she was in the NY hotel we stayed in last year and she's *tiny*) but "sexy"? Surely Eva Longoria is the most "bones-jumpable" Desperate Housewife?

As for Jessica Simpson and Maria Sharapova, I can only think that they're there because they compare favourably to Britney Spears and Anna Kournikova respectively and not because of any objective criteria.

Out of that list, the only worthy contenders are Jessica Alba and Halle Berry, an impression bolstered by the poll on the page you linked to which has Alba first at 23% and Berry second at 18%

"Disagree with you on the subject of Keira Knightley however; I've met her and she is extraordinarily pretty."

Maybe she's one of those people who don't photograph well then; what I've seen of her online hasn't really knocked me over.

"Surely Eva Longoria is the most "bones-jumpable" Desperate Housewife?"

Oh, indeed, indeed! See, *that* is what I'm talking about - I don't know many red-blooded guys who wouldn't pick Longoria over the rest of her cast-mates or most of the FHM "top 10" without thinking twice, but she doesn't fit the stereotyped ... ahem "heartland" look that magazines like this seem to prefer.

Berry is 40 this year (I was surprised to discover) and Hatcher will be 42. McCarthy and Electra (real name Tara Patrick incidentally which may or may not mean anything to you) are in their 30s, Jolie is 30. But I don't think their ages per se necessarily imply FHM is mostly read by Sad Dads who, so far as I'm aware, still tend to lust after women young enough to be their daughters. It's probably more to do with familiarity and, particularly in the cases of McCarthy and Electra, the manner in which they came to the Sad dad's attention in the first place.

No list that omits the incomparable Lauryn Hill is worth my time. And though it's hard to believe now, Whitney Houston was at one time heart stoppingly beautiful. Naomi Campbell, last I checked, was still gorgeous, and still nutty as a pecan loaf.

The Asian ladies you've posted are quite attractive. Like the frat boys you've mentioned, I'm unfamiliar with the depth of talent in that part of the world.

Jim

Gong Li is still competition for any of them. Zhang Ziyi is a contender too.

Ross

"I can easily reel off several scores of non-white women I consider objectively far more attractive than most of the women on this list"

Objectively? How on earth can you rate attractiveness objectively?

Chuckles

Abiola's pics of the Asian babes arent too flattering either. The third one is particularly sad.

Abiola

"How on earth can you rate attractiveness objectively?"

Objectively as in "Guaranteed to raise wood in most red blooded males": what's so difficult to understand about that.

"Abiola's pics of the Asian babes arent too flattering either. The third one is particularly sad."

I'm supposed to take this seriously when they're all in fact of *the same person*? I think you're a little late for your next eye exam, buddy ...

Andrew

"Objectively as in "Guaranteed to raise wood in most red blooded males": what's so difficult to understand about that."

I assume you mean red blooded straight males! :)

Abiola

Of course!

Won Joon Choe

Amen, brother!

I find those big-boned, hairy white females oh so attractive.

Not!

Won Joon Choe

Jim,

Zhang Ziyi seems to be one of those Asian women whom white men more so than Asian men find attractive. She has those stereotypical "Dragon Lady" features that epitomize how white men perceive Asian beauty ought to look. Possibly the most extreme case is that of Lucy Liu, whom no Asian male born and raised I know in Asia find attractive. Granted Miss Zhang is contestably more attractive than Miss Zhang, but she does not represent the traditional image of an Asian beauty.

Won Joon Choe

Chuckles,

They are all photos of the same person, Lee Hyo Ri, who is possibly the biggest pop-star in Korea. I thought you were a self-proclaimed expert on Korean affairs?

Perhaps the fact that two different individuals thought the four photos of Miss Lee that Abiola posted represented different people demonstrate that white men do indeed think all Asians look alike.

Finally, I'd add that I am not too enamored of Miss Lee either, given that she'd had much plastic surgery done, including a conspicuous, grotesque boob job.

Jim

W,

Do you mean to say that there is one traditional standard? What would that be - Yang Gui Fei? So then all Zhang has to do is put on 75 pounds or so.

Zhang isn't some kind of "dragon Lady", she's just small and delicate. That appeals to a lot of men, some to the point of expecting bound feet, at least in the past. Remembr, she became popular in China before she became known to Western audiences.

Won Joon Choe

Jim,

By "Dragon Lady" features, I meant primarily facial-features-wise. That is, I mean extraordinarily sharp features: e.g. "slant-eyed."

I am not certain of the exact chronology of Miss Zhang's path to fame. But I thought her star skyrocketed after "Crouching Tiger..." became such a big hit in the West? Even if she had considerable popularity in Asia before she became big in the West, I don't know how you can prove the latter had no impact in her increasing fame in Asia.

Anecdotal evidence like this is obviously not dispositive but I thought it'd be amusing to point out the following fact for kicks. Abiola is a college classmate of mine, and so naturally a number of people in my circle follow his Blog. And about half a dozen of us (all of whom except one were born in Asia) are discussing this particular entry via group e-mail. The first response when Zhang's name came up? "Zhang is fuglee."

Won Joon Choe

By the way, Miss Lee is being sued for plagiarism by Miss Spears:

You may want to determine the truth for yourself"

Abiola

"I'd add that I am not too enamored of Miss Lee either, given that she'd had much plastic surgery done, including a conspicuous, grotesque boob job."

I'd heard this one a long time ago, but I've yet so see any evidence that it's more than just a malicious rumor, just like the old claims about Britney Spears; besides, if plastic surgery were an obstacle to being thought beautiful, most of the women on the FHM list wouldn't be on there either. In any case, I could simply replace Hyori with Song Hye Kyo, Kim Tae Hee, Misaki Ito, Yonekura Ryoko or any of a long, long list of very attractive East Asian women who are not to be found on this list. (Oh, can't forget Choi Ji Woo, who I've been watching on the Japanese series "Rondo" [輪舞曲/윤무곡] - very nice ...)

"By the way, Miss Lee is being sued for plagiarism by Miss Spears"

As if it mattered! Miss Lee's music is no more central to her appeal than Miss Spears' was to hers ...

Won Joon Choe

Abiola,

You are right; Miss Lee doesn't seem to have done much to her face. You can tell if you compare her middle/high school photos with her current mug. In fact, the similarity between Miss Lee in her mid-teens and now is striking and rather unusual in comparison to other Korean stars. But this is a point that I've already conceded. My problem with her has to do with her boob job, and I don't think that is in dispute.

Won Joon Choe

"But this is a point that I've already conceded."

Oops. My bad. I didn't make this clear here.

I was confusing what I said in the e-mail discussion I am having with a few college mates and the comments I made on this Blog.

Chuckles

Scratch the "s" at the back of "babes". I thought the last two pictures gave her an uneven skin tone. She *does* seem to have an uneven skin tone you know. And close up...

Won Joon - Don't go inventing self proclamations for me. I suppose its too much of a drag asking you for a citation here?

Though its not difficult to see the difference between the first picture and the last three. Its got nothing to do with "thinking all Asians look alike." The 3rd picture is simply awful.

dsquared

I'm with Chuckles on this one; the pictures linked to appear to be of a pretty but not exceptional Chinese (or possibly Japanese, I dunno) woman with a load of purple makeup on her face. She doesn't seem obviously either more or less deserving of being on some magazine list than the ten women who are already on it.

Abiola

"a pretty but not exceptional Chinese (or possibly Japanese, I dunno) woman with a load of purple makeup on her face."

Stunning that you both get her nationality wrong despite guessing twice - she's Korean! - and that you make your judgement about "pictures" (in plural) from a single picture which Chuckles said seemed to be worst taken of her. Use Google to do a little homework on Lee Hyori (Hyo-Lee) before saying something so ridiculous: the woman is absolutely stunning.

"She doesn't seem obviously either more or less deserving of being on some magazine list than the ten women who are already on it."

Well you would say that, wouldn't you? After all, you've already said you think Kiera Knightley is exceptionally beautiful, which contravenes all reason as far as I'm concerned: I actually have a copy of Monday's Evening Standard lying nearby, and the face I see on it captured at her 21st birthday party isn't one I'd stop twice to stare at.

KXB

It's not about who's sexiest - it's about which actress has the best PR people.

I elicited this pic from Google images:
