There is more ot thisstory.

Here it is, 2005, and this law is still on the books. How has such a law survived so long? Either it's because everyone agrees with it and no one has succesfully had it thrown out, or else it's because everyone ignores or is unaware of it.

The second scenario is operative under the old Southern social order, when the civilized and worldly Episcopalian gentry ran things, and the Baptists in the lower orders knew their place. Since the 60's that social order has been dying, and there is a new consensus in the South. The gentry are still Episcopalian, but now the Baptists and Evangelicals have real political power. So the first scenario kicks in.

A rising middle class is almost always Puritan and puritanical.
