One senses that the French and the Germans are probably actually rooting for a Bush victory, whatever they might indicate to the contrary in public

Either that or they are genuinely deluded about the extent to which Kerry is prepared to grovel (i.e. not in the slightest) to France in the interests of "multilateralism". One major benefit of a Kerry victory would be that it would call the Franco-German bluff - they won't be able to blame the Texan cowboy anymore.

"One senses that the French and the Germans are probably actually rooting for a Bush victory, whatever they might indicate to the contrary in public"

It wouldn't surprise me. And because everyone needs a demon. Bush and the terrorists need each other. Chirac needs Bush for the reasons Frank mentioned and because Bush's belligerence allows Chirac to distract French public opinion from his record of failure at home.

"Bush and the terrorists need each other."

In what sense do the terrorists need Bush? Al Qaeda seemed to have hit enough targets long before Bush came to office and are likely to continue to do so long after he leaves office.

See Bild's reasoning for endorsing Bush http://medienkritik.typepad.com/blog/2004/10/another_october.html, in particular:

3. Under Bush, the US, as a superpower, will continue to bear the financial, military and casualty burden in the fight against terrorism in a "holy war" which Islamic fanatics unilaterally declared.

and

6. Bush knows that Europe and Germany don’t have the military at their disposal to become involved in any further foreign military engagements. Therefore he won't ask them for help. Kerry will do exactly that – and will further burden already damaged German-American relations.
