If Congress is intent on giving handouts of taxpayer money to everyone who comes begging, why not give $5 billion to Larry Flynt and Joe Francis while they're at it? Pornographers have to eat too!
"The government is handing out money," Francis tells E! News. "They're moving toward a nationalized economy, and Larry and I felt we might as well be a part of it."
"People are too depressed to be sexually active," Flynt added in a statement. "This is very unhealthy as a nation. Americans can do without cars and such but they cannot do without sex."
Reading between the lines, it's clear that neither man is serious about this proposal, but this joke of theirs does make a good point: it's one thing to inject capital into the financial institutions which play such a vital role in credit expansion (though it would have been better to do so via buying common stock and tossing their managements), but there is absolutely no reasonable justification for giving away taxpayer's dollars to inefficient car manufacturers and the greedy UAW parasite which leeches off their bloated carcasses. That George W. Bush should have been the one to do precisely this, even after the congressional GOP had finally rediscovered the virtues of free-market economics, is as damning an indictment of Dubya's rule as one can find: what point is there in screaming "Obama is a socialist!" when the (soon to be ex-)incumbent Republican President is no better?
