If you've been following Japan-related news even just in English, you'll be aware that bullying is very much in the headlines at present, with a spate of high school student suicides and threats of suicide riling up the Japanese mass media. Naturally, many are raising the question of what to do about this troubling phenomenon, and a certain commentator by the name Tomofusa Kure has come up with a most ingenious proposal: instead of taking your own life, take the bully's!
Suicide because of bullying has become a societal problem. Whether one looks in the newspapers or at the television one sees shameless self-styled "well-informed persons" earning their small change by spewing self-aggrandizement under the pretence of offering advice. That the advice offered is of absolutely no use to the young boys and girls who are being bullied is something you [i.e. the commenters] know best of all. Isn't it the case that the one best method for dealing with bullying is retribution? While I obviously can't endorse such a brazen call to murder in the name of vengeance, there's a part of me that can't help feeling just a little bit sympathetic to Mr. Kure's argument, in as far as it suggests turning the tables on one's attackers rather than throwing one's own life away: if you're going to die, why not take your oppressors with you? Of course, better still would be to leave out the dying on both sides entirely ...
In schools it is taught that retribution and revenge are morally wrong. However, that is a falsehood. The natural right that human beings hold to seek revenge is one the modern state does not monopolize. If one studies legislative history at university one quickly comes to understand this. Revenge is morally proper. In fact, haven't the Chechens who have continuously been oppressed by Russia been resolute in taking revenge?
That the victim him/herself should choose death is an idiotic thing to have occur. The one who ought to die is the assailant.
Bullied ladies and gentlemen, if things come to the stage of committing suicide, take revenge instead. It needn't mean the death penalty! Because the juvenile protection law protects you.
Oh, by the way, it's a damn shame I don't have the time to translate some of the outraged responses by the 2channelers who've read this modest proposal, as they really are entertaining.
