Is there no country on Earth safe from the depradations of these lunatics?
At least two people have been killed and 50 others injured in a series of small bomb blasts across Bangladesh.Officials say more than 300 explosions took place simultaneously in 50 cities and towns across the country including the capital Dhaka.
An outlawed Islamic group, Jamatul Mujahideen Bangladesh, says it carried out the attacks.
[...]
"It's an organised attack," said Home Minister Lutfozzaman Babor, adding that 58 of the country's 64 districts were affected. How long will it take for someone to blame this on "occupation"? Last I heard, Bangladesh was a free and overwhelmingly Muslim country, but that shouldn't prove much of a problem to the usual suspects: it certainly hasn't proven to be an obstacle to their blaming Bush and Blair for terrorizing their fellow Muslims. In each incident, bombs were set off in crowded spots, mainly at government offices, journalists' clubs and courts, between 1030 and 1130 local time.
Leaflets from the Jamatul Mujahideen Bangladesh have appeared at the site of some of the blasts. It all makes perfect sense, doesn't it? What better way could there be to get the Bushitler Zionist neocon lackeys out of Muslim countries? The minds of Islamic terrorists and their apologists work in mysterious ways - next thing you know, some jihadist will be attacking Mecca to teach the US a lesson ..."It is time to implement Islamic law in Bangladesh" and "Bush and Blair be warned and get out of Muslim countries", the leaflets say.
That's the big problem with Robert Pape. Not so much with his theory but with his political conclusions. According to Pape if we go back to our old imperialist habits - cozying up with vile regimes as that of the Saudi's - so that we can buy our oil on the cheap, everything will be fine. Supporting Saddam and supplying him with chemical weapons so that he can keep Iran in check is ok for Pape, but overthrowing his regime is not, because that could lead to terrorism. He said:
"In the 1970s and the 1980s, the United States secured its interest in oil without stationing a single combat soldier on the Arabian Peninsula. Instead, we formed an alliance with Iraq and Saudi Arabia, which we can now do again. We relied on numerous aircraft carriers off the coast of the Arabian Peninsula, and naval air power now is more effective not less. We also built numerous military bases so that we could move large numbers of ground forces to the region quickly if a crisis emerged.
That strategy, called “offshore balancing,” worked splendidly against Saddam Hussein in 1990 and is again our best strategy to secure our interest in oil while preventing the rise of more suicide terrorists."
That strategy also kept Saddam in power for over two decades and it still keeps the Saudi's in power. And it was the prime motivation for al-qaeda against America. It was considered to be weak, unprepared to offer a single combat soldier to keep safe it's oil interests. Pape's strategy maybe will lead to less suicide terrorists, but it will not diminish the hatred against the United States. And Saddam still would be in power...

I think I recently heard David Frum talking about how Bangladesh shows that Islamic countries don't produce terrorists if they're democratic, regardless of what other problems (like poverty) they have.
I was reading somewhere that to most Muslims, the antithesis of "tyranny" is "justice," whereas to most Westerners, the antithesis of "tyranny" is "freedom." I can't quite place where, though.

"next thing you know, some jihadist will be attacking Mecca to teach the US a lesson ..."
Too late.

These people are beyond parody - demolishing the tomb of Mohammed? In the W only an inveterate Muslim-hater would suggest such a thing, yet here are the Saudis itching to do so without a peep of protest from Muslims elsewhere.

From the article:
Ali al-Ahmed, the head of the organisation, formerly known as the Saudi Institute, said: "The destruction of Islamic landmarks in Hijaz is the largest in history, and worse than the desecration of the Koran."
Heh!
